> Haringey Council is working with the UK's leading environmental solutions provider, Veolia, to deliver accessible bins across the borough for a better, more inclusive future. Due to the height of their lids, traditional recycling bins are not designed for wheelchair users.

Residents at Brookside House, a retirement housing complex run by Haringey Housing, have received a new recycling bin that allows them to dispose of their waste responsibly whilst making a big difference in their day-to-day lives. Unlike the old large bin, the new one has an opening at shoulder height which means wheelchair users no longer need assistance with lifting the lid.
Resident Philip, who spends his free time turning old plastic bottles into flower pots, was particularly delighted about the upgrade:
“Before the new bin, I always had to find someone who was available to help me put my recycling in the bin. Having access to it myself makes my life so much easier - I feel independent and can focus on things like gardening instead.”
Charles White, Well-Being and Support Worker at Haringey Council, said: “Veolia helped us resolve the issues faced by some of the residents at Brookside House by introducing an accessible bin. This has had a major positive impact on the community at Brookside House, people are much happier now and everyone can bring out their recycling on collection days.”
